Planning a fundraising event

There are many different events you or your book-club can undertake to raise money for The Novel Challenge.

You could:
• Hold a quiz night
• Run a raffle
• Run an Auction
• Hold a garage sale
• Second hand book stall
• Book swap meet

If you have more ideas on fundraising events that you want to share with others, please click here to tell us!

1. What type of event do you want to run?

Get your friends together and brainstorm ideas. The more ideas the better!

2. Who will you get to ask to help you plan and run your event?

To make the most of your fundraising efforts it’s really important to plan thoroughly!
Make a checklist of the things you need to organise, making note of who is responsible for what and deadlines involved. Failing to plan is planning to fail!!

3. When you will hold your event?

Finding a suitable date can be tricky. Be flexible with your time frame as venues, prior commitments, suppliers and other external events will all have an impact on when you can hold your event.

4. Where will you hold your event?

Smaller events, like a book swap meet and a garage sale can all be held at home. Bigger events such as a quiz night, or an auction will require a bigger venue such as a hall. Try your local RSL, pub or bowls club for a free or discounted room. An event such as a second hand book stall needs to be held at a market or similar place. Ask about getting a stall at your local market.

5. Who will you invite to attend your event?

Friends; family; members of your book-club, sporting club or craft group, general members of the community – maybe even some local personalities!

6. How will you get your event noticed?

To get the most out of your event, you want as many people to attend and as much exposure as possible. Find out if you can put up signs at work, in your local library, your church,  or community hall, use your Facebook page to tell your friends what you are doing, or put an ad in you school newsletter. There are loads of ways to advertise your events.
Ring your local newspaper, radio station or TV station and ask them to come along and cover your story. You are doing it for a very worth cause after all!

Don’t forget to thank the people who helped you with the event, those who attended and any sponsors/supporters that helped you to make a difference to those living with MS!
